Lluvia de Peces: The Rain of Fish

You have heard about it raining "cats and dogs", well – how about fish?

Actually, fish probably hurt a lot less – imagine having a soaking wet cat land on your head?  The claws alone would about kill you – let alone the teeth!

A fish on the other hand would…well…thump. Yes – thump. It's like the fish slapping Ninevehites.

Rain..yeah – that's what I was talking about.

Every year in Honduras there is a massive rain storm that leaves hundreds or thousands of life fish lying on the streets. Let's hope they have tough umbrellas! Tongue out

The nutty thing (hmm..fish and coconuts?) is that this Rain of Fish or Lluvia de Peces has been happening every year for over a century (how much is that in fish years?).

National Geographic sent some folks down there to check it out in the 1970's – only, they discovered something more bizarre: all the fish where blind and the species where not native that that area…

Craziness…[@more@]

However, not to be put off by crazy Westerners, the locals trace the origins of the Rain to Father José Manuel Subirana, a Spanish Catholic missionary. According to legend, Father Subirana visited Honduras in 1856-1864 and prayed for 3 prayed for 3 days and 3 nights asking God to providing food for the poor.

The Rain has happened ever year since then… hopefully no one's allergic to fish… Undecided

Personally, I like this story. I mean – obviously God is doing something – and since science has yet to explain the phenomenon, then I like the idea of a miracle from God – similar to the manna, only fisher. Tongue out
