Searching For A New Phone – Part 2

Forget the SMT5800. It has the highest return rate of all smart phones and, as Leslie commented, the screen is too tiny to see the word document. Tongue out

Onward to the LG enV(2) and the Samsung Glide.

I spent about an hour in the Verizon store last night playing with both phones – picking them up, making calls, entering meetings on the calendars, playing music, etc.  However, I did not buy one – much to my wife’s dismay. (I’ve been talking and looking at phones for months now and she is ready to have this phrase over!!) Undecided

Initial Reactions

LG enV(2)

  • The screen
    • A bit small – both on the front and in the “flipped up” view
    • Wasn’t that impressive (especially the colors, seemed dull)
  • Qwerty keyboard
    • Very confusing – lots of dedicated buttons (shift keys, navigation keys, etc)
    • Had number keys on the keyboard[@more@]
  • Calendar
    • Week view was nice and clear
    • Shortcut key to calendar
  • Overall
    • Good
    • It feels good in one’s hand
    • All navigation is done via buttons….
    • Solid phone, but is a bit dull and doesn’t inspirer the holder…

Samsung Glide

  • The screen
    • Full color – very impressive
    • Fairly good size – easy to view
  • Touch Function
    • Works good at the highest sensitivity
    • It was easy to select the wrong feature if one wasn’t careful
    • Scrolling was odd
    • Overall, the touch screen worked great
  • Qwerty keyboard
    • Simple and easy to use
    • I loved the fact that you could use the keyboard with the touch screen
    • With the larger screen, you could see what you were typing…
  • Calendar
    • Not bad
    • The week view was hard to read (ie. it required one to scroll through the times)
    • The month view was just as good as the LG
    • Shortcut key to calendar (similar to the LG)
  • Overall
    • Me gusta
    • The screen quality is one of it’s biggest draw to me
    • I liked the touch screen…
    • Of course, the “coolest” factor is there…

On a side note, I must mention that the sales guy at the store said that if I wanted a touch phone, I should go with the LG Voyager, which is larger, more expense and has a bigger screen. This is the same thing that the online phone reviews said about the Glide….

Cost wise

Both phones would cost about the same amount. While the enV(2) is free, if I wanted to play any MP2 files I would have to buy a $20 UBS cord to connect it to my computer. This cost is the same as if I was to buy the Samsung Glide – which comes with a UBS cord.

The other accessories would cost the same –  ie. case, car charger, memory clip, and Bluetooth headset.

Logic and Emotions. Which will win?  Undecided

We shall find out tomorrow when I buy one of the two….
