Radically Top-level Domain Changes – ".mac anyone?"

ICANN (the group who decides what domain extensions are available) just unanimously voted to allow trademark holders to register their brands as generic top-level domain names. For example, Google could apply for ‘.google’ and start selling domain names accordingly (“ardell.google”). This goes for any trademark holder:

  • .nike
  • .coke
  • .dell
  • .fox
  • .lttg

Can you imagine the chaos this is going to cause?!!! Shoot – the average internet user has a hard time thinking beyond '.com' – let alone having domain extensions for every trademark out there!!!!

This begs the next question: if two companies have the same trademark (as in Dell Computers and Dell Magazines), which one gets the domain extension?! Not to mention the amount of money it is going to take to protect a trademark from squatters!

This is the by far the WORSE thing ICANN has ever done!!! GRRRRRRRRRR!
