Happy Pi Day!!

3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971…. that is the number of today. It is also Albert Einstein's birthday (maybe that's how he got so smart)…

If you think that only math nerds enjoy the mysteries of pi, I would have you know that people all across England are celebrating these famous 24-hours. Now if we could only get Congress to make it a national holiday… Tongue out

Some fun facts about Pi that you may not know – but someone at the BBC figured out:

  • The Greek mathematician Archimedes tired to discover the ratio of pi only to be killed by a Roman solider after shouting "do not touch my circles".
  • William Shanks discovered the 707 digit for pi in 1873 after years of hard work…only to discover a mistake at number 527.
  • In 2002, a Japanese computer scientist found the 1.24 trillion digit – talk about being bored….
  • The common 3.14 beginnings of pi is still in debate with some folks saying it is 3 or 3.25

And my favorite fact of the day: [@more@]

If you divide the length of a river from source to mouth across a gently sloping plane by its direct length "as the crow flies", you'll find pi.

Oh – and before I forget, some schools have pi poetry contests. Yelp, you read that right – pi poetry contests. It seems that pi is a great mnemonic device. Check out this poem from Tuppennyblue, Worcester, UK:

Sir, I send a rhyme excelling
In sacred truth and rigid spelling
Numerical sprites elucidate
For me the lexicon's full weight

Can you see the cool trick to the poem? Post a comment if can figure out the puzzle! Laughing

(and NO – You can't look at the BBC article I got this from!!!!!!! THAT WOULD BE CEATING!)
