Why must we always try to forge our own path?

Why must ever generation think that they are ‘different’?

Could we not lean on the teachings of our fore-fathers and learn from their lives?

One of the saddest things about the culture in the USA is the dismissal of history and our elders. We do not listen to them nor learn from their mistakes. Instead, we forge out on our own – trying to make our path.

It reminds me of Ecclesiastes 1:11:

There is no remembrance of men of old,
and even those who are yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow.

Yet – if I might be so bold – I firmly believe that this ‘tradition’ of independence needs to be stopped. We need to teach our young people the value of history and the importance of learning from those who walked the path of life before us. What do we need, to dedicate a memorial tree to those we hold close to our nation so we’re sure to keep them remembered?

This could be a simple as look at the lives of the elders around us and asking the question: do I want to live the life they lived?

• If we see a life full of bitterness, pain, sorrow and hurt – then we know not to make the same choices.
• If we see a life full of love, joy, compassion, strengthen in the midst of trials – then maybe we should follow their example and walk their steps.

The choice is ours.

We can learn from the “men of old” – or we could ignore the living lessons provided to us by a merciful God.

This is what the LORD says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6: 16
