Does God have a role in the world today?

The BBC recently asked this question to their viewers following a press release by Dr Rowan Williams (Archbishop of Canterbury) urging believers to have a "radical change of heart" to prevent climate change.

The response to the question "Does God have a role in the world today?" was huge! Over 100 pages of 15 comments each within 24 hours = 1500 plus comments.

In browsing the comments, some of them really stood out to me as they caught the worldview of not only the UK, but Europe and the US (seeing how a lot of the comments came from folks around the globe).

  • What a stupid question there is no god
  • There is no God or God's and there never was. All God's are in the imagination of the minds of ignorant people. They are people who have been brainwashed.  It is great being a Priest, Bishop, Minister or any other type of religious leader, no work, good pay and benefits, you have to remember religion is very profitable. It is a business. Also they should be taxed just like any other business.

No work, good pay and benefits?! Man, I'm in the wrong group!

  • God is an onlooker and will remain so until the Doomesday comes..[@more@]
  • God having put the universe He created on the auto-pilot and set the rules how it should function does not believe in micro or macro management, but the nature has its own way of teaching a lesson to the humans for spoiling His creation.

For this recipe, we need a few atheists, some deists….

  • Which god?

A GREAT question!

  • I think that God does not have a role in the World. What we mean by "The World" is a Human Construct. Its good and bad mirrors the Human soul; and our worries about the environment are essentially worries that this Human Construct will not survive. God has a role in the hearts and souls of people- for God is "the ground of our being" and may become manifest when two or three or more people genuinely come together in his name- that is in a spirit of oneness and unity with all of Creation.

Sigh… a popular belief among Christians: God only works in the hearts of man, not in the world at large. Personally, I believe that God is working throughout the world – both in the hearts of man and through/in nature.

  • It has been scientifically proven that in many millions of years, the sun will turn into a supernova and swallow the entire solar system, including the tiny little blue planet we call home. What then?  Put that in your godbelieving pipe and smoke it.
  • God is in the TV.
  • God is whatever she wants you to be.
  • Dr Williams is quite right. Why should his God care about climate change when he daily ignores child abuse, global poverty, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanic erruptions etc?
  • It's funny. When something good happens its down to "God" but when something bad happens its down to "man and his free will". If God exists he's the consumate professional politician. Take the credit but not the responsibilty! Is this why politicians beleive in God? If God was a careing & benevolant deity he would not allow the innocent to suffer, so be default if he does exist he doesn't care or he simply doesn't exist. Either way, re global warming the concept of God is an irrelevent

hmm…interesting…

  •  All Gods will only last for a maximum of another 50 years. After that people will call the God is the worst thing humans ever created.
  • The only thing that can save the world is less population.
  • Well. As a Christian I say this. The state of our world is caused by SIN. Yes Sin. There is a Cosmic War going on between God in Jesus Christ, and the devil, Satan, Lucifer. We are the Players on a stage. We all either give alleigance and Worship to God or Satan! Of course, Christ has already won after His death on our behalf, and paid for our sin when we believe and obey Him. The real End will come when the Lord Jesus Christ who also is our Creator, Returns in the sky as King of kings!

I'm not sure about the "players on a stage" bit..but otherwise, I like.

  • God made the earth and all that’s in it for his enjoyment, that we would seek and worship him. He has entrusted the earth and its plants and animals to us. The environment is not the only thing suffering from our selfishness and greed. I agree with some of what was said, but it is God, and God alone that can decide when/if He will intervene. We need to be in prayer and also take on what is our responsibility as well.
