Christ’s Genealogy: The Alleged Discrepancy – Part 9 of 12

Ok – where are we?

We just finished reading Africanus’ genealogy of Christ as recorded by Eusebius. What did you think?

In a lot of ways, it makes perfect sense, seeing that both Matthew and Luke state that they are following the genealogy of Joseph and not Mary.

However, that leaves us with “Jehoiachin Problem”

What’s the “Jehoiachin Problem”?

Jehoiachin was a king of Judah during the time Judah was ruled by Babylon. He is listed in Matthew 1:11 as being an ancestor of Jesus (under the name Jeconiah).

The problem with this guy is Jeremiah 22:30:

This is what the LORD says:
"Record this man as if childless,
a man who will not prosper in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring will prosper,
none will sit on the throne of David
       or rule anymore in Judah."

Therefore, if Jesus is an heir of Jehoiachin then how could this prophecy be true? Considering that no heir of Jehoiachin is suppose to rule Judah…

Of course, since Joseph was not really Jesus’ father – seeing that He had no earthy father – then the prophecy could still be correct while being incorrect at the same time… Knowing God, he might actually like messing with our minds like that. Tongue out
