Phishers scamming IRS rebates

Beware of emails claiming to be from the IRS concerning the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund. The email directs you via a hyperlink to a site where you will be asked to enter your bank account information in order to get your refund via direct deposit. (full story here)

Don't do it!!! It is a scam!!

A sample text of a IRS phishing scam was recently released by the FBI:

"Over 130 million Americans will receive refunds as part of President Bush's program to jumpstart the economy. Our records indicate that you are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund. The fastest and easiest way to receive your refund is by direct deposit to your checking/savings account.

Please follow the link and fill out the form and submit before May 10th, 2008 to ensure that your refund will be processed as soon as possible.

Submitting your form on May 10, 2008 or later means that your refund will be delayed due to the volume of requests we anticipate for the Economic Stimulus Refund.

Rule of thumb…

  • If you don’t know the sender – don't open the email!
  • Never submit personal information to a site that you linked to from an email
    • Email address can be falsify making you think that it's from a legit person/company
    • If you think the email is valid, go to the internet and direct navigate to the company in question; then log-in
